Wireless ‘Whoas!’

Filed under: Technology, Linux, Domesticity, Nuts-N-Bolts — Allan @ 17:26:37

I just installed the newest version of SimplyMepis_6.0 (Final Release) to the second hard drive on my notebook computer; a Model 1805-S203 in the Toshiba Satellite line. It has the Linksys WPC54GS version 2, PCMCIA (CardBus) wireless adapter installed (pretty-much permanently) for establishing a non-CAT5e connection to our nearly-enterprise-quality home network. SimplyMEPIS 6.0 in Final Release

Filed under: Technology, Linux — Allan @ 17:02:14

There has been some whining in the corridors, relative to some minor release date slips, but you can get your simplyMEPIS 6.0 Final release very easily…despite the fact that some of the mirrors haven’t sync-ed yet, and others are running at lower than optimum bandwidth.
Get it. Burn it. Install it. Have fun. (more…)

Looky-Here!

Filed under: Linux, Education — Allan @ 07:18:05

BBC news just posted this article, entitled, Microsoft opens up on file styles; which I presume to actually be speaking to microsoft’s closed, binary, undocumented file formats which they have, heretofore, refused to disclose to the world.

Some snippets from the article really do require some clarification: (more…)

The Ides of July Approach

Filed under: Technology, Linux, windoze — Allan @ 08:01:32

Come the ides-less-four in the month of Caesar, microsoft will (according to their stated plans) resolutely discontinue public support for windoze 98, 98se and win me. Security updates, patches, repairs for bad patches, and anything else that might have come down the windoze update pike will also be a thing of the past–for the little good it ever did anybody. *I’m Impressed*

Filed under: Technology, Linux — Allan @ 12:33:50

I have to confess that, despite the inherent stability, reliability and maturity of most contemporary Linux distros, the lack of serious issues with the MEPIS 6.0-rc2 release has the tendency to impress me. (more…)

SimplyMEPIS now in RC2

Filed under: Technology, Linux — Allan @ 20:36:07

Have a look-see at this latest news release from the MEPIS website.

I like the fact that Warren has slipped the release date back to 2006.07.10; because this is one of those little traits exhibited by people for whom quality is the highest priority. (more…)

SimplyMEPIS in Release Candidate

Filed under: Technology, Linux — Allan @ 15:29:27

I happen to like a lot of different Linux distributions, but I have narrowed in-upon upon SimplyMEPIS as the one that I tend to come back to time and time again. (more…)

Wireless Woes: Reloaded

Filed under: Technology, Linux, Domesticity, Nuts-N-Bolts — Allan @ 09:39:21
Ever since posting, in ‘Wireless Woes‘, that I had no problems getting a Linksys WPC11-Version4 PCMCIA wireless card working on Linux, I’ve received the occasional email asking how I did it.Instead of continuing to answer emails with what amounts to snippets of crib notes on the procedure I followed, I’ll put this information here and tell you folks to read it for yourselves.
