A 130+ IQ Should be Requisite for Computer Purchases…

Filed under: Technology, Linux — Allan @ 19:02:03

Yes, they warned us. As soon as Linux becomes so easy to install that an idiot could do it…they will. Then they’ll come looking for US. Behold and weep. (more…)

Evolution on windoze

Filed under: Technology, windoze, Domesticity, Education — Allan @ 07:13:41

No. I’m not talking about windoze evolution (‘innovation’, they keep calling it); which normally takes place in a dark alley, with the swift application of a blackjack to the back of the head of the owner of a truly imaginative software project–by Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer or Jim Alchin. That’s nothing new and noteworthy, because we’ve been watching microsoft cheat and steal to get ’software for nothing’ for decades. (more…)

Two Views of Proprietary Software

Filed under: Technology, Linux, windoze — Allan @ 21:59:03

I’d like to point you to a couple of URIs that form the background for the thoughts to follow:

Firstly, here’s a fun video from Novell, Inc. which is a bit of a departure from the image that most of may have of the Novell-types: stodgey.

Secondly, here’s a (more…)

In Rememberance…

Filed under: Technology, Linux, Memories, Spurrious Thoughts, The Pensieve — Allan @ 23:59:13

He was with us at LinuxNewbie.org and JustLinux.com.

Bone marrow cancer claimed his life on 2004.08.25.

You will find him under the name of ‘mdwatts’. He was Michael D. Watts.

We miss you, Mike.

Cipherfunk Shutdown by GPL Police

warren's picture

The cipherfunk web site, which made extra packages available to Ubuntu and MEPIS users, was shut down in response to complaints from Ubuntu team members Matthew Garrett and Philipp Kern. It is my understanding they alleged that cipherfunk was not making modified GPLed source code available in a timely fashion. (more…)

One Response to: “Linux disruptive opportunity with small businesses being overlooked”

Filed under: Technology, Linux — Allan @ 07:22:19

An article was posted on the Mepis forums (link); a reply to which I have reproduced below.

The reply falls into the category of background static, with respect to the thread of conversation.

Now, I have my own advocacy practices which, I believe, work well; and, considering the fact that I have absolutely no interest in the mortgage industry, I really have nothing substantive to add to the thread itself, except dealing with the following “flyer” posting. Doing so within the thread of origin, would be disruptive, so I’ll amuse myself with addressing it here (more…)

New Article in ‘Computers’ Section

Filed under: Technology, Hardware, Linux — Allan @ 07:21:20

There is a new article, complete with pictures, available for your perusal and comment.

Life has been so busy this summer as to make productions, like the one linked-to above, a bit impractical to accomplish; but the times are changing (as they always seem to do), so you should see more of the same in the future.

Your Help is Needed

OK. I’m posting the contents of a page to which I’m linking to from things like sig-lines, and to which I’m pointing others in my quest to make generally known the needs of a family in Austin, Texas. It’s a ‘for the sake of completeness’ type of thing, because of a couple of points that I hadn’t raised earlier, just in case you’re wondering about the obvious repetition. (more…)

Help the Starks Family.

The situation which has prompted this entry is tragic and, for your reference, I’m going to bracket the antecedent interval of concern with a couple of links to pages that I urge you to read fully; then give serious consideration to the matter of helping a member of the Linux Community, Ken Starks (aka: Helios).

First link: http://blog.lobby4linux.com/index.php?/archives/2005/09.html

Second link: http://blog.lobby4linux.com/index.php?/archives/2006/08.html

…and now, for those who are loathe to read the linked pages, I’ll give you a bit of a thumbnail sketch of what is going on with Ken. (more…)
