The 50th Anniversary of the IBM RAMAC 305
Hard drive technology passed the 50-year mark today.
The IBM RAMAC 305 Computer was introduced to market on 1956.09.13. It leaned upon the massive 5MB storage capabilities of the 350 Storage Unit, earlier introduced to market on 1956.09.04–all fifty, 24-inch platters worth of it.
Last month, IBM introduced the System Storage DS8000 Turbo, capable of storing 320 TeraBytes of information.
How far we’ve come! It makes me look expectantly at the road ahead, and think, “There’s more fun in store for us all.”
